Tray Bleaching (Teeth Whitening)
For whitening of dark, dull, or stained teeth, tray bleaching may be the best solution. Tray bleaching is performed by taking an impression of your teeth and making a duplicate model of them. On this model, a soft, thin, clear tray is fabricated. This tray is filled with bleaching gel and placed directly over the teeth. This bleach filled tray can be worn for several hours during the day or at night while you sleep. Results can be seen daily. To attain maximum results, most patients must wear the bleaching tray for 1-2 weeks. However, the timing of these can be influenced by strength of the gel and amount of time worn.
If your teeth or gums are sensitive to the teeth whitening gel, do not be alarmed. This is a normal reaction that means the bleaching formula is working. Any sensitivity will most likely diminish as you continue to whiten. If sensitivity continues, you can do a couple of things. First, reduce the amount of teeth whitening time. Secondly, try using a smaller amount of tooth whitening gel inside your mouth piece. The trick is to use enough gel to cover your teeth. We will be checking your progress after a few days and can adjust your tray or the strength of gel you are using if sensitivity is hindering your progress. Fluoride applications or MI paste are sometimes appropriate during the process to control sensitivity. The good news is that the sensitivity is reversible once the bleaching is complete.
You should continue to brush your teeth in conjunction with using the bleaching system. It is good to brush your teeth immediately before each application to remove any food particles.
With diligent wear the degree of color change with trays will usually exceed the in office Zoom procedure. In addition, you can keep a box of bleach in your refrigerator and touch up using your trays if you start to notice your teeth are picking up stains. This is much more economical than repeating the Zoom process.
