Gums and Oral Health

Glendale Dentist Serving Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria, and nearby areas in Arizona

Healthy gums are important to both your oral health and your overall systemic health.

Experienced Glendale, Arizona, dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox and the friendly team at Desert Smiles understand the value of healthy gums and emphasize preventive dentistry in an effort to help you maintain a bright, healthy smile and address potential issues before they become dental health problems.

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Furthermore, gum disease that is left untreated can contribute to an increased risk for overall health problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

The key to maintaining good periodontal health is a dental hygiene routine that includes quality at-home care as well as twice-yearly dental check-ups and professional teeth cleanings. Your at-home routine should include brushing your teeth at least twice every day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Brushing should be followed by flossing at least once a day in order to remove food particles that linger in hard-to-reach places between your teeth and gums. After brushing and flossing, you may wish to rinse with an antiseptic, anticavity mouthwash to kill additional bacteria and leave you with fresh, pleasant breath.

Thorough dental exams at least once every six months are also instrumental in assessing the health of your teeth and gums, and detecting potential problems early.

If you would like to learn more about the importance of your periodontal health or schedule your regular dental exam, please contact Desert Smiles. We welcome patients from the Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale, Arizona, areas.
