At Desert Smiles, we understand there’s a lot of fear surrounding the root canal procedure. The procedure has a reputation derived from an older, less sophisticated era of dentistry. Fortunately, modern dental technology and techniques enable us to offer you a root canal procedure that is simple, quick and provides a minimum of discomfort. A root canal is appropriate when one of your teeth is infected or abscessed. The actual “root canal” is the hollow area within the center of your tooth. During the procedure, we remove the nerve and soft area of the canal. The nerve is not particularly important to your tooth. We’ll anesthetize the area to ensure that you don’t feel much pain during your root canal. Next, Dr. Wilcox will make an access hole into the tooth and clean out the canal. He will rub out the sides of the cavity and wash it out with water or a liquid solution. After this is done, Dr. Wilcox seals the tooth temporarily. At your next appointment we’ll use a sealer patch or rubber compound to fill the root canal. Finally, if necessary we restore the tooth using a dental crown or other restorative procedure. If you have an oral health condition that may require a root canal, please contact Desert Smiles today to schedule your initial consultation. Dr. Donald Wilcox serves patients in Phoenix, Glendale, and Scottsdale, Arizona.
