Porcelain veneers are placed over the front of teeth that have been impacted by cosmetic imperfections. There are several different types of dental veneers, including thin options such as Lumineers® and DuraThin™, allowing the treatment to meet a variety of patient needs. The best way to determine which type of dental veneer is ideal for your needs is through a one-on-one consultation at the Glendale office of Desert Smiles.

Prep vs. No-Prep Veneers

Traditional porcelain veneers are too thick to place without first preparing the teeth. Before these types of veneers can be placed, a small amount of natural tooth enamel must be removed. This allows the veneers to slide seamlessly into the smile, addressing pronounced cosmetic imperfections such as:

  • Gaps and spaces
  • Severe tooth discoloration

Once teeth have been prepared for veneers, they will always have to have something – veneers, bonding, or crowns – placed over them to prevent sensitivity and other issues.

No-prep veneers can be placed without enamel removal. Much thinner than traditional veneers, options like Lumineers and DuraThin can address cosmetic issues such as crooked tooth presentation, chipped or cracked enamel, and irregular tooth sizes just like thicker options. They cannot, however, address more severe cosmetic issues.

Choosing the Best Option

Lumineers and DuraThin veneers can be removed without the need for additional services. Traditional veneers cannot.

Traditional veneers can address severe cosmetic imperfections. No-prep veneers cannot.

The option that is best for you depends entirely on your concerns.
