The fourth annual Mission of Mercy was held this past week for two days at the Veterans Memorial Colesium.  The event is sponsored by the Arizona Dental Association and provides free dental services to the homeless and those unable to financially afford traditional dental care.  DesertSmiles was blessed to contribute for our fourth consecutive year.

Ruth who takes great care of our patients at the front desk, and her husband Lon worked many hours the day prior to the event helping to set up equipment and get several hundred patients processed for the next morning to receive their treatment.  Many of these patients camp out at the colesium days in advance to receive care.

Dr. Donald Wilcox was there at 6am the next morning helping treat as many patients as possible during the day.  The last patient of the day embodies the fact that we receive much more back than we can give.  She had severly decayed front teeth causing pain and obviously preventing her from being able to smile the way most of us take for granted.  After a long session of root canals and cosmetic bonding to rebuild the teeth was completed, she wanted a mirror.  When she saw the dramatic change she responded, "Thanks to you I am going to have a great Christmas."

All of us at DesertSmies thank our many wonderful patients for the opportunity to provide your dental care.  May your Christmas be healthy and a time of great joy.

Give yourself a great smile with a dental implant or smile makeover consultation at Desert Smiles in Glendale, home to Top Phoenix Dentist Dr. Wilcox. As you digest your Thanksgiving turkey dinner and strategize your holiday shopping, it’s likely that you’ll take stock of all that you’ve achieved in 2015.

If your list of annual accomplishments includes looking after your teeth and gums with regular visits to Phoenix-area dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox at Desert Smiles in Glendale, or undergoing a cosmetic dentistry procedure such as dental implant placement in order to upgrade your smile, what better way to acknowledge your improved health and wellness than to show off an ear-to-ear grin in holiday photos and “selfies.”

Here are three tips for smiling bright in your holiday pictures:

  • No. 1 ─ Stay calm. Act naturally and avoid the urge to stiffen up the minute someone asks you to “Say cheese!”
  • No. 2 ─ Watch your posture. A tall back along with a straight neck and head will help set off your gorgeous smile.
  • No. 3 ─ Turn slightly. Gently move your shoulders in one direction and your chin in the opposite direction, and then smile for the camera. This will help waylay such photo mishaps as double-chins or slouching.

If, however, a cracked or missing tooth, or another dental health issue, means that you simply don’t want to smile for pictures, know that you can improve your smile and outlook on life all at once by visiting with Phoenix-area cosmetic dentist Dr. Wilcox at Desert Smiles in Glendale for a dental implant or smile makeover consultation, or to discuss the array of cosmetic dentistry solutions available to you. Simply give call Desert Smiles today at 602-978-1790.

If you're in Phoenix, Glendale or Scottsdale and you're ready to explore dental implants, contact Desert Smiles today to visit with our "Top Dentist."At Desert Smiles, which serves Glendale, Scottsdale and Phoenix, our implant dentist, Dr. Donald Wilcox, has the holidays in mind just like everyone else.

So Dr. Wilcox understands that with Thanksgiving turkey dinner coming up and all of the other treat-filled winter holiday celebrations that follow, you may be concerned about how your smile will fare, especially if you recently received or replaced a dental implant.

One thing you can count on with dental implants is that eating and drinking will be more natural and less cumbersome than these activities might be if you were wearing dentures, which can cause sensitivity and discomfort when foods or drinks are very hot, very cold, very hard or very sticky.

But that's not the only major benefit of dental implants. With today's technology, many patients also can undergo the procedure in just one or two visits, which means there may still be time for you to schedule a dental implant procedure if you were hoping to have it done before Christmas or New Year's Eve.

We can't imagine a better holiday gift for yourself than the ability to laugh, speak, eat and smile without feeling insecure about missing or damaged teeth.

When you're ready to explore how dental implants can greatly enhance your life, please call Desert Smiles to schedule your consultation with Dr. Wilcox, who was voted by his peers to be one of the "Top Dentists" in and around Phoenix, Glendale and Scottsdale: 602-978-1790.

If you have recently lost a tooth or have a tooth that is failing, our Glendale implant dentist can place a dental implant in approximately three visits, preventing deterioration of the jaw that can lead to further tooth loss.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are durable restorations that can not only give you the appearance of a natural tooth, but they can help keep your other teeth in place by keeping the underlying bone healthy. There are many other benefits to dental implants as well, including:

  • Easy to Care for:  Dental implants should be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
  • Long Lasting: With good oral hygiene, a dental implant can last many years.
  • Support Other Teeth: Dental implants prevent bone loss that can lead to the loss of neighboring teeth. In addition, they are often used to support a dental bridge that replaces several teeth at once.
  • Improved Appearance:  Dental implants are custom molded, so they can even improve upon the shape of the natural tooth to create a more appealing smile.

It's been just under a year since the world said goodbye to Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the Swedish orthopedic surgery pioneer credited with discovering the osseointegration process that forever changed the way cosmetic dentists in Phoenix and worldwide treat patients who suffer from missing teeth.

Historians have already dubbed Dr. Brånemark "the father of dental implants." While his process, which enables titanium to fuse with natural bone over time, revolutionized medicine and dentistry, in some ways the Gothenburg-born surgeon (pictured here)  picked up on a missing tooth solution that was discovered by ancient civilizations.

Consider this: Archaeologists know now that ancient Mayan and Egyptian people placed shells into empty tooth sockets in place of missing natural teeth, which enabled easier eating and speaking.

Of course, since Dr. Brånemark's 1950s discovery that the jaw would except titanium as well as knees and hips, more than 7 million implants bearing the Brånemark brand have been placed.

And dental implants in general are now deemed the most durable and natural-looking missing tooth solution.

If you're in the Greater Phoenix Area and suffer from one or more missing teeth, please contact Desert Smiles in Glendale online or by telephone to book your appointment dental implant consultation: 602-978-1790.
