It’s National Dental Hygiene Month, a great time to reflect on your daily routine and to look for ways you might be able to improve it. This, of course, starts with brushing and flossing.
Teeth should be brushed after every meal and snack, but not immediately after. It’s best to wait for 30 minutes, allowing any enamel that may have been softened by food or drink to solidify. Drink a glass of water during this time. Drink more water throughout the day in general. And be sure to brush your teeth before you go to bed at night as well.
When you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to brush for at least two minutes. If you have restorations or sensitive teeth, avoid toothpaste with abrasives like charcoal or baking soda.
Flossing should be done before you brush your teeth both in the morning and before you go to bed. Glide a clean section of floss in between each tooth – from root to crown – to remove debris and plaque. If you struggle with flossing, consider a water flosser or a floss pick. We can also provide instruction and guidance during your routine visits to our office.
Professional Dental Care
It is important to visit our office every six months for preventive dental care. During these visits, we will remove plaque and tartar from every surface of your teeth and carefully inspect your teeth and gums for signs of potential problems such as infection or decay. Routine visits also allow us to screen for signs of oral cancer and to address any questions or concerns you have about your oral health.
Once a year, we will take x-rays of your teeth, allowing us to check structures that cannot typically be seen and helping to ensure you are provided information about treatments that may be needed to keep your teeth and gums healthy for life.
We are dedicated to your comfort. If you feel nervous or anxious about dental care, we encourage you to ask about our safe and effective sedation dentistry options. We offer sedation for most of our services.
