Missing teeth can be an aesthetic problem. Depending on their location in your smile, even one missing tooth can have a profound impact on its appearance. This is, however, the least of your concerns when a tooth is missing.
Missing teeth can allow adjacent teeth to slide out of place. Not only does this impact the strength and integrity of the bite, but it can also alter the structure and appearance of the face – an issue not simply related to adjacent tooth slippage.
When a tooth is missing, so too is its root. The roots of teeth help to ensure proper mineralization in the jaw, working to fully support each tooth. Once the root is gone, bone loss is inevitable. This will result in changes to the size, shape, and stability of the jaw and can allow for additional issues, including malocclusion, speech difficulties, and problems eating.
As if tooth slippage and jaw collapse were not enough, missing teeth increase your risk for gum disease, tooth decay, and root canal infection, making the replacement of missing teeth all the more important.
Tooth Replacement Options
We are pleased to offer three different options for tooth replacement:
Dentures, partials, and bridges are placed on top of the gums. They can prevent adjacent tooth slippage, help retain speaking and eating abilities, and enhance aesthetics. They cannot prevent jaw collapse.
Dental implants are placed into the jawbone. They act as an anchor for restorations, including dentures and bridges, while working to protect the structure of the jaw. Permanent and capable of restoring full strength and beauty to the smile, dental implants are often the best solution for tooth replacement.
