Untreated sleep apnea can cause headaches, high blood pressure, and even heart attacks. While this serious health condition is readily treatable, effective treatments have typically required that patients wear an oral appliance to bed or sleep with an obtrusive machine. But the FDA has recently approved a new implant that could improve treatment success rates.

Sufferers of sleep apnea experience airway collapses and blockages during sleep. When these obstructions prevent you from getting enough air, the brain rouses you out of sleep to restore airflow.

The Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation implant device was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and will be available in late 2014. This device consists of a small neurostimulation generator that is implanted in the chest, along with a lead that stimulates the nerve running from the ear to the jaw. The product generates a mild electrical impulse to the nerve controlling the jaw, which keeps airway passages open and restores breathing.

The Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation implant is intended for patients who don’t respond to other treatments. At Desert Smiles, we currently offer a wide selection of sleep apnea treatment options, including oral appliances and retainer devices. All of our treatment options are simple devices that a patient wears at night to restore the airway and ensure a good night’s sleep.

Once the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation implant is available for use, Dr. Wilcox will carefully evaluate its effectiveness. If he finds that it is a suitable alternative to oral appliance therapy, he will consider offering it to his Phoenix-area sleep apnea patients.

If you suffer from sleep apnea and are ready to learn about the many options to restore your sleep and health, please contact Desert Smiles today to schedule your appointment. We serve patients in the Phoenix, Arizona area.
