While it’s important to visit Dr. Wilcox twice a year for your regularly scheduled dental cleanings, maintaining a good daily oral hygiene routine is also essential to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Dr. Wilcox recommends brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day, but rinsing with mouthwash is also an effective way to minimize bacteria production in your mouth and prevent cavities.
While there are many effective mouthwash options in your local drug store, you can also make your own. The following recipe provides you with a refreshing and cost-effective alternative to the typical mouthwashes you’ll find in the store.
- 8 oz. water
- 2 teaspoons PreviDent GEL (1.1% Sodium Fluoride) — you can get this from your pharmacist
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 tablespoon xylitol (you can find this at Whole Foods, most health food stores, and online)
- 1/4 teaspoon peppermint oil extract
Blend all ingredients together using either a regular blender or an immersion blender. Refrigerate the mouth rinse in an air-tight container. This recipe will provide about a 2 week supply.
Rinse your mouth using approximately 10 ml (2 teaspoons) for approximately 1 minute after brushing your teeth. For best results, avoid eating, drinking or rinsing for a half hour after using the mouth rinse.
During your regularly scheduled dental checkups, Dr. Wilcox will share a variety of tips on how to improve your daily oral hygiene regimen in order to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
