dr. donald wilcox discusses how you know if you're a candidate for dental implants
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: When patients are missing teeth or multiple teeth, they are more commonly interested in dental implants as replacement options currently because of the great success of them and the natural appearance and feel that dental implants provide.
The best way to find out if you're a candidate for dental implants, whether it be one or many, is through what we call 3-D CAT scan. Fortunately, they're very inexpensive to get. They're a very easy, stress free procedure. And with this, we can input the 3-D scan into a computer and through that, we can: evaluate the position for the implant, check where all the nerve, sinus cavities, all these anatomical landmarks that are important to avoid are at within tremendous accuracy, we can try in different sizes of implants, position them properly where they would fit the best and load and serve the patient the best.
And with this accuracy, then we create a surgical guide which actually guides the placement to put exactly where we have designed so that there's no guesswork involved.
So 3-D scan is the best way to evaluate to be sure you're a candidate and ensure that the implant is placed properly.
Obviously your medical history is important. There's very few things that preclude people from having implants. It's always cautionary if the person is a heavy smoker, especially and/or if you're a diabetic which is not being controlled well. These are factors that can relate to the health of the bone and could cause an implant failure, so we're certainly going to evaluate these factors to make sure that implant placement is not only doable but it's going to be there long term for you then you have success long term.
