There are two types of tooth stains:
- Extrinsic, often caused by foods, beverages, and lifestyle choices like tobacco use
- Intrinsic, typically a result of aging, dental fluorosis, and medications
Extrinsic stains may present as discoloration, often impacting the entire tooth. Intrinsic stains can appear mottled, ribboned, or splotchy, but may also cause a yellowing or general dinginess to teeth.
At Desert Smiles, we offer both take-home and in-office tooth whitening options that are very effective at eliminating even the most stubborn of extrinsic stains. While these same treatments may help with intrinsic stains, they can also make them look more pronounced when surrounding enamel gets lightened.
Treating Deep Stains
One of the most effective cosmetic treatments for intrinsic tooth staining is porcelain veneers. Placed over the front of teeth with below-the-enamel stains, porcelain veneers can produce a spotless and brilliantly attractive surface appearance.
Shaped and colored to match adjacent teeth, veneers reflect light in the same manner as natural enamel and have a built-in stain resistance that allows them to stay bright for several years. In fact, when properly cared for, porcelain veneers can provide an attractive covering for teeth impacted by severe discoloration for 10 or more years, making them one of the longest-lasting cosmetic restorations available.
Our Dental Veneers
Dr. Tenney offers MAC Veneers™, which are at least two-times stronger than options made of thinner ceramics. Not only are these dental veneers longer-lasting than many other options, they are expertly designed and crafted to ensure the most realistic and attractive results.
No-prep veneers, including DuraThin® and Lumineers®, are also available at our Glendale office. These may not be suitable for more pronounced staining, however, due to their relative translucency.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Tenney will carefully assess your smile and discuss all potential treatment options to help ensure you are making the best decision for your needs.
