Gum disease is one of the most common conditions affecting adults throughout the country. There is a wide range in severity of gum disease, from mild inflammation to serious tissue damage. If left untreated, gum disease can eventually lead to tooth loss.

There are essentially two different stages of gum disease:

Gingivitis is the early stage of periodontal disease. It occurs when plaque builds up on your gums, causing them to become inflamed. This irritation may cause your gums to bleed while brushing your teeth. No irreversible bone or tissue damage occurs from gingivitis. However, if left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the more advanced form of gum disease. During this stage, the inner layer of bone and gum tissue pull away from your teeth, forming pockets which collect bacterial plaque and debris. As periodontitis progresses, you develop an infection which slowly destroys your bone and gum tissue. This causes your teeth to become loose and eventually fall out.

Due to the serious nature of periodontal disease, it is important to undergo treatment as soon as possible to prevent irreversible damage, including tooth loss. During your regularly scheduled evaluations at our Glendale dental office, Dr. Wilcox will evaluate your teeth for any signs of gum disease and recommend the ideal periodontal treatment option to restore healthy gum tissue.
