After a dental implant is inserted into your jaw, you must undergo an extensive healing process. During this process, called osseointegration, your jawbone grows around and fuses with the dental implant. It typically takes between 3-4 months for osseointegration to complete. After this process, your dental implant will be permanently and securely attached to your jaw, allowing it to function like a natural tooth root. It is important for osseointegration to occur successfully. This stage of the dental implant process will significantly impact the results achieved by your procedure. If you do not have sufficient bone density for osseointegration to be successful, Dr. Wilcox may need to perform a bone graft before the implant is inserted into your jaw. After your jaw has fully healed and osseointegration is complete, you will return to our Glendale office and Dr. Wilcox will attach a titanium post, called an abutment, to your dental implant. An impression of your tooth will be taken and used to create the dental crown that will function as your prosthetic tooth. Once your crown has been constructed, Dr. Wilcox will place it on the abutment, and you will be able to enjoy a fully functional tooth that blends in seamlessly with your smile.
