However, you needn’t be referred to schedule an appointment for any of our services.

Tooth preparation is necessary for some cosmetic procedures in order that your restorations will fit seamlessly into your smile. Without tooth preparation, your porcelain veneers may protrude oddly from the smile, creating a look that is unnatural and unbecoming. To avoid this, tooth preparation is often needed for veneers.

As explained in the video below, Glendale cosmetic dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox only prepares those teeth that require a better foundation – whether due to contour irregularities, old restorations, or similar issues – to help conserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. During your initial porcelain veneers consultation, Dr. Wilcox can assess your smile and help you determine which teeth, if any in your mouth, will need to be prepared prior to the placement of your restorations.

To schedule your porcelain veneers consultation at Desert Smiles, please call 602-978-1790 today. Located in Glendale, Dr. Wilcox serves all nearby areas of Arizona including Scottsdale, Peoria, and Phoenix.

Consider these facts:  one in four people die of heart disease in the United States each year.  Research shows 84% of people with heart disease also have periodontal disease.

The worse your periodontal disease, the higher your chance of cerebral ischemia (stroke).  Severe periodontal disease increase your risk 4.3x over people with no periodontitis.

People with Alzheimer's, a type of dementia, ten to decline in their oral hygiene.  This creates a vicious cycle of periodontal disease, which leads to dementia, declines in oral hygiene and then worsened periodontal disease.

Treating periodontal disease prior to the second trimester has been shown to reduce pre-term, low-weight babies by 80%

These photos and xrays show a full mouth reconstruction where traditional dental fixed bridges were replaced with dental implants and crowns.  The bridges were old and unsightly and had problems over time with porcelain fracturing due to the stress on the bridge spans.  The esthetics of surgically guided implant placement followed by cosmetic restorations makes it impossilbe to discern the implants and natural teeth.  There are no teeth connected together any longer for greatly improved hygiene.  The change in the beauty of the restorations speak for themselves.  For more information about smile makeovers and dental implants for patients in Phoenix and Glendale visit

The process of placing porcelain veneers typically requires two working-visits to our office. These visits, spaced about three weeks apart, will be for the preparation and placement of your customized veneers. One or two visits may be needed in between for check-ups and whitening of adjacent teeth to help ensure a color match when your porcelain veneers are placed.

All Types of Veneers

Dr. Wilcox offers both Durathin and Mac Veneers. These veneers have been chosen for their durability, ease of placement, and aesthetic superiority. However, no single option will be ideal for every smile.

During your initial consultation at our Glendale office, Dr. Wilcox will carefully evaluate your cosmetic imperfections, discuss all of your options, and help you choose the type of porcelain veneer best for your needs.

Problems that can be fixed by porcelain veneers include:

  • Gaps and spaces in between teeth
  • Crooked or crowded tooth presentation
  • Irregular tooth sizes and shapes
  • Severe tooth discoloration

Durathin veneers require no tooth preparation and may only require one working visit to place. Mac Veneers are a thicker option that will require tooth preparation. The trade-off is a more durable veneer that may last significantly longer than Lumineers and alternatives like Durathin.

The truth is, there is no single type of porcelain veneer that can meet the diverse needs of every patient. Dr. Wilcox has carefully chosen these brands based on the specific benefits they offer our patients. We will discuss which option is ideal for your smile when you come to our Glendale cosmetic dentistry office for your initial consultation.

Are There Faster Options?

How Long Does it Take to Place Porcelain Veneers | ArizonaPorcelain veneers offer remarkable, but not singularly unique results. Similar results can be achieved through options such as dental bonding, which may be significantly faster to complete. However, it is important to remember that, while porcelain veneers take longer to place than some cosmetic options, they last much longer than most alternatives and remain one of the best options available for the treatment of cosmetic imperfections.

Commonly, veneers are placed in combination with other services, enabling Dr. Wilcox to address imperfections with each tooth to produce a consistently pleasing aesthetic. Combinations may include veneers with bonding, dental crowns, tooth whitening, gum lift, and even general services like tooth-colored fillings, inlays/onlays, and deep cleanings.

When services are combined in this manner, the procedure is called a smile makeover. This option is neither needed nor attractive for every patient but remains a very useful solution for men and women struggling with more pronounced cosmetic imperfections. When you come to our office to discuss porcelain veneers, we can discuss complimentary services as appropriate.

In this short video, Glendale dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox discusses nonsurgical treatments for gum disease along with long-term maintenance of healthy gums with Perio Protect.

Gum disease is an issue that will impact nearly all adults at some point in time in their life. When caught early and addressed appropriately, through various periodontal services and improved at-home care, gum disease is incredibly easy to treat. When allowed to progress, however, this common condition can result in oral health problems such as tooth loss and jawbone necrosis, along with increasing risks for heart attack, kidney and liver failure, and a host of other systemic health problems.

We want to help you keep your teeth and gums at peak health. Please call our Glendale office at 602-978-1790 to schedule an appointment today. Dr. Wilcox welcomes patients from Chandler, Scottsdale, Peoria, Phoenix, and all surrounding areas.
