October is National Dental Hygiene Month, an effort to promote dental hygiene and to highlight the important work that dental hygienists perform in helping prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other serious oral health issues.
Our dental hygienists, Pat, Kellie, Donna, and Sarah, work to improve the patient experience through personal and thoughtful attention paid to every man, woman, and child, with whom they interact. This month, we honor the important work our hygienists do and encourage you to take steps at home that can help make their efforts at protecting your smile even more effective.
The hygienists at our Glendale dentistry office can clean your teeth when you come in for routine visits, but these cleanings will only do so much. To help ensure optimal oral health throughout the year, you need to step up your at-home routine as well. This should include:
- Brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush after every meal. Twice a day is barely adequate. If you want to keep your teeth free of stains and decay, brushing three to five times daily is optimal. If you use a manual toothbrush, brush for at least two minutes. One minute of brushing after every meal if your toothbrush is electric
- Floss morning and night. Flossing removes debris and bacteria from in between teeth and is essential in the prevention of gum disease
These two simple steps will not only help keep your teeth bright and healthy, they will improve your experience when you come in for biannual cleanings and examinations, shortening the duration of these appointments and reducing the need to come back for restorative services like filings, inlays and onlays, and dental crowns.
Our dental hygienists can provide you with personalized suggestions for toothpaste, type of toothbrush, and flossing techniques during your routine visits to our office. If you need additional assistance with implementing an at-home plan, we will make every effort to provide you with the support you need to maintain the healthiest and most attractive smile. If you have questions, please ask. We are here to help you look and feel your absolute best and will work directly with you to help that happen.
Biannual visits to our Glendale office serve two very important purposes: they allow one of our hygienists to thoroughly clean your teeth and they allow Dr. Wilcox to detect minor oral health problems before they get out of hand. When caught early on, most dental issues can be resolved with only minimal intervention. When treatment is delayed, however, discomfort, functional limitations, and more pronounced issues are bound to follow.
We recommend you visit our office for general services every six months, but encourage you to contact us in between for cosmetic concerns or in the case of sudden discomfort. Dr. Wilcox and our team are here to help you keep your smile bright and strong year-round, and welcome an opportunity to serve your needs whenever they arise.

Placed over the front of your natural teeth, porcelain veneers work to cover cosmetic imperfections that can detract from an otherwise beautiful smile. Incredibly thin, dental veneers fit snugly, enabling them to produce a natural-looking appearance that is complementary to surrounding teeth. If you have cosmetic dental issues making you feel less confident in your smile, veneers may be the ideal solution for your needs. The best way to learn is through a one-on-one consultation with Glendale cosmetic dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox at the office of Desert Smiles. Call us at 602-978-1790 to schedule a consultation and learn how Dr. Wilcox can enhance your smile with porcelain veneers.
What Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?
Porcelain veneers are suitable for a number of cosmetic imperfections. Common reasons to consider veneers include:
- Chipped or cracked tooth enamel
- Uneven tooth sizes
- Irregular tooth shapes
- Gaps or spaces in between teeth
- Crooked tooth presentation
Porcelain veneers can also be used to address severe staining and discoloration below the enamel such as that caused by fluorosis or tetracycline. These deeper stains are often impervious to teeth whitening and may actually be enhanced when topical whiteners lighten surrounding enamel.
Dental veneers can be placed on multiple teeth or used for the perfection of just one or two. How many veneers you will need depends entirely on the scope of issues being addressed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Wilcox will examine your teeth to determine which ones could benefit from veneers and provide you with information about all of the cosmetic treatments that may serve to improve the look of your smile.
Porcelain veneers can address cosmetic malocclusion such as crooked teeth and gaps in a fraction of the time required by orthodontic services like Invisalign®. In fact, the entire veneers process can be completed in just about four weeks, earning porcelain veneers the occasional nickname, “instant orthodontics.”
Many newer orthodontic treatments can straighten teeth in a matter of months, but dental veneers alone can produce a straight and attractive smile in just a few weeks. However, more pronounced malocclusion or functional bite issues may not be well-served by porcelain veneers. Dr. Wilcox can discuss this with you in greater detail during your initial consultation to help you decide if a cosmetic treatment or an orthodontic solution will be best for your needs.
Tooth Preparation for Porcelain Veneers
Dr. Wilcox offers two dental veneer options:
MAC Veneers are perhaps the longest-lasting and most durable veneer currently available. Manufactured with the highest quality ceramics by some of the most trained and experienced dental lab technicians in the world, MAC Veneers can last as much as two-times longer than other options, making them an ideal choice for many of our patients.
To place MAC Veneers, a small amount of your natural tooth enamel will first need to be removed. While thin, MAC Veneers will protrude slightly from the teeth if placed without prior enamel contouring. Tooth preparation for porcelain veneer placement is painless and need only be done once. If you are nervous about this part of the veneers process, we would be happy to discuss the option of gentle sedation during the procedure.
Tooth preparation is not always necessary for the placement of veneers. If your cosmetic issues are less pronounced, Durathin Veneers may work perfectly. Thinner than MAC Veneers, Durathin Veneers can be placed without the removal of tooth enamel, making them a wonderful solution for patients who do not require a thicker veneer for tooth perfection. However, like Lumineers®, Durathin Veneers are not always the best solution for severe staining or more pronounced cosmetic imperfections.
Dr. Wilcox offers different veneer options to better meet the needs of all of our patients. He will discuss tooth preparation and no-prep selections during your initial consultation to help you choose the solution best for your specific needs.
Porcelain Veneer Durability
MAC Veneers can last up to two times longer than other brands of porcelain veneers. Durathin Veneers can also last for several years. How long either option lasts will depend on how well you take care of your veneers following placement.
Porcelain is stain resistant. When cared for properly, your veneers can maintain their bright white appearance for ten or more years. However, veneers can chip, crack, scratch, and break even while maintaining their brilliance, making it important that you use the appropriate products for tooth cleaning.
We recommend avoiding toothpaste with baking soda or other abrasives. These can scratch and damage porcelain veneers. Avoid medium-bristle toothbrushes as well. These, like abrasive toothpaste, can prematurely destroy porcelain veneers.
To care for dental veneers:
- Brush your teeth with a soft-bristle toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste at least twice a day
- Floss in between all teeth, including those with veneers, twice daily
- Visit Dr. Wilcox every six months for professional cleanings
Your biannual visits allow Dr. Wilcox to examine both your natural teeth and your porcelain veneers, enabling him to make adjustments or recommend replacements as needed. Replacing your veneers should not be a common occurrence if you care for them properly, but should be expected every ten to twenty years.
Advantages Offered by Porcelain Veneers
Dental veneers are capable of producing a flawless smile over the course of just a few short weeks. Once placed, veneers can continue to provide amazing results for ten or more years. Fast and long lasting, porcelain veneers are shaded and shaped to match adjacent teeth, allowing for a seamless appearance. This appearance can be maintained through proper care and the occasional whitening of nontreated teeth.
Easy to care for, porcelain veneers will require little to no change to your daily oral hygiene routine and may even prompt you to improve your process for a cleaner and healthier smile all around. During your initial consultation, Dr. Wilcox will discuss the benefits of veneers in detail to help you determine if they are the most effective solution for your needs
